   From humble beginnings in 1929, my Great Grandfather, Alton Johnson, and Great Grandmother, Lena Johnson, opened a small watch repair shop aptly named "Johnson's" in downtown Raleigh. Over the following years they decided to take the business a step further and develop into a full service jewelry store.
These were the days I remembered as a child: my great grandmother LBJ -- as I called her -- would sit on a wooden stool in the middle of the store decorated with a green motif; green display cases, green desks, and green ring boxes. The store had the feel of 1930's class mingled with modern day efficiency. She tended and ran the store diligently for the years of my youth.  Johnson's prospered in Downtown Raleigh for many years, especially with the addition of Joseph Ira Lee Jr. when he married Hannah Ruth Johnson, the Johnson's only child. Joe, with Poncho, his singing parrot, gradually took over the responsibilities of running the store as my great grandparents aged. A sight to see in Raleigh, Joe could often be found walking around town with verbose Poncho on his shoulder and a captain's cap on his head. Through his leadership, the store experienced great success. With each new generation, our store has been blessed with innovative ideas and growth. After Grandfather Joe retired, my uncle, Joey Ira Lee III, and dad, Dan Hudgins, were the next to take over. Joey and Dan eventually moved the store to its current location in Olde Raleigh Village.
